November Feel the Magic Update

Hi everyone

What an extraordinary year it has been as we move closer to Christmas at the speed of knots.

It is been an amazing six-week period throughout October and early November with how the Feel the Magic community has come together. Please see video update below on what’s ahead from Feel the Magic.

We also have recognised how tough December/January can be for many people and for families who’ve lost a parent, guardian and/or sibling. We’d like to ensure our families, that we are continuing to run our Healthy Grieving Program through December and January so that help, and support, from Feel the Magic is available. Please go through the website to register or email Kristy Thomas to participate in the program.

We also have some exciting events coming up for your diaries.

  1. 3rd December: Night of Hope. A virtual event hosted by Michael Usher with special guests and Feel the Magic ambassadors inspiring others through their stories.
  2. 2-6th December: Magic Ride. Our Magic Riders are riding 500km’s through the Snowy Mountains for grieving kids. Hoping to raise awareness of Feel the Magic and raise enough money for a Camp Magic program in 2021
  3. 16th December: special Christmas ‘Town Hall’ over Zoom with James, Kristy and myself sharing a live update on Feel the Magic as well as a Christmas celebration. More information will be emailed to everyone shortly.

For more information on what is on at Feel the Magic, please visit the website or look out on social media.

Hope to see you soon and take care for now.

Kind regards, Adam

We send our August update with some cautiously positive news. It is also a challenging time for our families and supporters in Victoria and we hope that the pandemic pain eases for you all soon. We more so hope that you have the right support structure(s) around you through these challenging times and reiterate our offer of support to you – just reach out to us.

For our NSW/ACT families, as noted above, we have some great news but present this with great caution!! We are planning Camps and a new day Camp for families concept (called Magic Quarterly’s) for October through to December. More information will be available on the website and sent directly to families as we progress with the planning. We will be taking all necessary COVID planning precautions and health directives as required.

FTM C-19 response update #13: 6/July

There seems to be light at the end of the C-19 tunnel! Let’s hope that everyone continues to do the right thing and that the easing of restrictions doesn’t create a new wave of virus infections.

Please see short video message and a summary of points below:

  1. What’s ahead with our Programs in 2020 (Oct-Dec 2020)
  • We continue to follow social gathering restrictions set by the Government
  • However, we are planning for programs to return in Oct-Dec in some capacity
  • We will provide the return to programs plan by early August (next update)
  1. New program coming – Magic Quarterly’s
  • The team have continued to implement our online Healthy Grieving Program whilst also developing a new program concept aimed at the whole family – a day Camp concept called Magic Quarterly’s
  • We are aiming to trial the Magic Quarterly’s in the Oct-Dec 2020 period and again will provide further details in the August update
  1. Healthy Grieving Program
  • The feedback on our new Healthy Grieving Program has been fantastic and thank you to the families who piloted the program and the families who have participated in the program so far
  • A quote from a new Feel the Magic parent who participated in the program which, for me, articulated perfectly why we exist as an organisation:

“We thought we had to just “be ok” with our new normal. The program has helped us to realise that we are allowed to be happy again and that being happy doesn’t mean we have forgotten him.  We still have tough times, but by using the tools from the program we are now working through our emotions as they come up, so the tough times are slowly changing from tough whole days where we felt stuck, to tough moments that pass once we acknowledge them. This is a real growth point for us.”

I look forward to updating you again in August and please ensure if you need help or support from the team, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Please continue to stay safe and look out for the communities around you.

Kind Regards

Mother’s Day Special on The Project

We are truly overwhelmed with the outpouring of support from the special Mother’s Day story that went to air on The Project on Channel 10. Hayden, Aimee and Arabella spoke so beautifully of their mothers and showed the true meaning of resilience in the face of such cruel adversity. Just as touching was witnessing the vulnerability from presenters Lisa Wilkinson and Peter van Onselen. We’ve been advised that close to a million viewers have seen this clip since going to air and this number continues to grow thanks to the power of social media!

This story struck a chord with many Australians, we ask you to please continue to share amongst your networks and together highlight the importance of early intervention of childhood grief and loss.

Thank you once again to every single person involved, especially the starts of the show Hayden, Aimee and Arabella.

Online Healthy Grieving Program Launch 14th May

Feel the Magic, an Australian charity dedicated to supporting grieving children and their families, is expanding their service with an online program.

A lot has changed here in Australia, we are all living with restrictions and the uncertainty of the future – but one thing that hasn’t changed is the grief that 1 in 20 young Australians are feeling after the loss of a parent/guardian or sibling.

The Healthy Grieving Program is a new grief education and support service that will allow Feel the Magic to provide ongoing support to Australian families and will be crucial in reaching children in isolated and remote areas, where grief support and counselling is difficult to obtain.

Modelled on Feel the Magic’s successful Camp Magic initiative, the Healthy Grieving Program has been adapted for video conferencing, where up to ten children per session will participate supported by their parent or guardian.

In multiple sessions over a weekend or evening they will form bonds and connections with others, while learning important strategies and skills for improving their emotional health, both individually and as a family.

Like Camp Magic, the Healthy Grieving Program will support Australian children aged 7 to 17. Participants are placed in groups with their peers to ensure that discussions are age appropriate and focused on the most beneficial outcomes for their stage in life.

Co-Founder and CEO James Thomas said these sessions would be facilitated by trained educators and mental health experts and include access to Feel the Magic’s clinical psychologist for any participants who require extra assistance following the program.

“We know through the success of our Camp Magic program how vital it is for grieving children to have a supportive network of peers, with feelings of isolation through grief common” said Mr. Thomas.

“The Healthy Grieving Program will not only allow us to provide support to our families in addition to Camps, but it will allow us to reach countless Australian children who may otherwise find it difficult to attend.”

The Healthy Grieving Program launches on Thursday 14 May 2020.

Due to the cancellation of the ACT, Sydney and Victoria Camp Magic programs in April & May, priority access will be offered to campers and families who missed attending as a result. If you would like to take part in the next available Healthy Grieving Program please register your interest Here.

Feel the Magic is funded entirely by donations and they are seeking support to help reach as many children as possible. The Healthy Grieving Program costs $199 per child or $1999 for 10 children. You can sponsor a young grieving life today by clicking Here.

All donations $2 and over are tax deductible.

FTM C-19 response update #10: 12 May

Good afternoon everyone

It’s an exciting week at Feel the Magic. If you were fortunate enough to see Hayden, Aimee and Arabella’s story on Channel Ten’s The Project, you’d be inspired as much as I was by their amazing courage and resilience. Thanks to everyone involved to help share their stories and the support Feel the Magic has provided them and many others.

A summary of the core messages in the video message:

  • A big and massive thank you to the Feel the Magic team. They are working tremendously hard during the C-19 opportunity time in many ways for a stronger, more robust and resilient Feel the Magic. Look out for what is installed through-out 2020.
  • Healthy Grieving Program goes live this week!
  • Call for help!! We are seeking professional volunteers to provide some help from home! This week we are calling out for:
    • A psychologist that understands our grief space and can assist Dr Robby Fullerton (Feel the Magic’s Clinical Director) with some research areas with a project we are working on.
    • Please contact James ([email protected]) if you would like to discuss how you can help

I look forward to updating you again next week but, as always, please ensure if you need help or support from the team, don’t hesitate to reach out.

Please continue to stay safe, stay home, look out for the communities around you.

Kind Regards
